The month of September going into October was significant for all of the wireless carriers as well as for several companies unveiling and releasing their new smartphones.

Apple recently unveiled its fifth generation smartphone, the iPhone 4S, which was not received well initially as Apple enthusiasts had been hoping and speculating about an iPhone 5 for several months preceding the launch.

However, interest in the iPhone 4S has peaked as the latest Apple smartphone quickly sold out of pre-orders, selling over 1 million pre-orders in 24-hours beginning on Oct. 7.

The iPhone 4S will be available for shipping and purchase on Oct. 14.

At the iPhone 4S unveiling, it was announced that the Sprint network will now power iPhones. The network will carry the iPhone 4S as well as the 8GB iPhone 4.

The Galaxy S2, Epic 4G Touch released on the Sprint network on Sept. 16 to rave reviews and became the company’s bestselling phone in record time as it was only available for half of the month.

The Galaxy S2 debuted on the AT&T network on Oct. 2, after its original Sept. 18 release date came and went with no smartphone. Many AT&T customers expressed frustration about the wait.

The Galaxy S2 will release on the T-Mobile network on Oct. 12.

Verizon has decided not to carry the Samsung Galaxy S2 in order to promote its own Android smartphone, the Motorola Droid Bionic.

Commentators expect October to be a fierce month of competition between the iPhone 4 and 4S and the Samsung Galaxy S2.
